Section 2: A place to start

This section is for people who want to review some basic patterns of English before attempting the more advanced units. Topics include greetings and introductions, talking about college life, likes and dislikes, future hopes and plans, sport, the weather, descriptions of people, directions, etc. A place to start contains a number of individual sound files for listening practice. Please note that units with sound files take a little longer to download than other units.

We have interactive instructional grammar units, each covering an area of grammar in detail. Each unit is followed by one or more interactive activities, games, quizzes, dialogues and readings, which practice the grammar in the unit.

Section 4: Writing
We start our writing course by looking at the differences between speaking and writing, the writing process and brainstorming. We also look at the differences in the structure of different types of texts including essays, letters, theses, and focus on thesis statements and topic sentences. Each rhetorical pattern (argument, cause and effect, comparison and contrast, process, definition, description, narration, satire) is explained in an introductory unit. The Writing units contain a combination of information and exercises/practice activities and are followed by full-length interactive model essays.

This section includes interactive units on Describing Graphs and Tables, Making Notes and Summaries, Speeches and Presentations, In-text referencing and Bibliographies, Film Reviews, Hotel Reviews and Story Genres.

Our units on pronunciation and intonation combine information and fun practice activities, quizzes, etc.
