English Writing Online is for people who want to improve their English. We focus on writing and grammar, but we also include reading, vocabulary, listening and much, much more.
   
Everything about English Writing Online is interactive. We have interactive grammar units, interactive writing units and interactive practice exercises and activities. You will be amazed by the variety and originality of the individual programs. These programs have been carefully designed to help you learn English, to motivate you and to entertain you.
   
English Writing Online is integrated, comprehensive and cohesive. Each web page forms part of a complete learning program. Writing concepts, grammar and vocabulary are recycled and reinforced throughout the units.
   
English Writing Online has no advertisements, no banners and no distracting links. It is user friendly and it is easy to access the web pages that you want to study. When you sign-in, you go directly to our Contents page from where you have full access to the entire website, including the chat rooms, the forums and the opinion poll.
   
The material has been written by experienced native English language teachers who have worked abroad and understand the needs of non-native learners of English. We present language in context so that you can see how it is used.
 
  The writing units
Our approach to teaching writing is based on genre. This means we look at the differences between speaking and writing and the differences between different types of written and spoken texts.
   
We also look closely at the generic structure of a number of different types of texts. Understanding how texts are structured helps you organize your own written work logically and coherently. This is an essential skill for anyone who needs to use English to communicate effectively.

    As well as looking at the overall structure, we also show you how information flows logically in a text by highlighting the connections between given and new information. This helps you improve your writing.
       
         		 We teach you how to write essays using the rhetorical patterns of argument, cause and effect, classification, comparison and contrast, definition, description, discussion, narration and process. We also have units on satire, speeches, presentations, graphs and tables and note taking. Each unit contains fun and interesting interactive exercises and activities to help you understand the points covered. We also have full-length model essays with interactive structure, vocabulary and comprehension tasks. Why pay someone hundreds of dollars to write an essay for you when you can learn to write it yourself?
       

    As well as formal essays, we include a number of readings that use more informal written and spoken English such as magazine articles, consumer reports and conversations.
       
    		English Writing Online integrates the teaching of vocabulary into the writing, grammar and practice exercises. We have definitions and explanations of hundreds and hundreds of words. Also included in the website are vocabulary lists and irregular verb lists in handy reference pages.
     
      The grammar units
    		We know that language learners need grammar to write well and our interactive grammar units are a special feature of the website. You don’t just read the grammar, your watch it like a movie! We present each grammar point individually, followed by colour-coded example sentences. Instead of passively reading the sentence, your eyes and brain are actively engaged as the sentence flows dynamically across your screen.
       
    		What’s more, you control the movie so you can start or stop it at any time to focus on a point or example. Alternatively, you can skip to the end of the page, go to the contents page to find the point you need, or go through the unit page by page. Learning grammar will never be the same again!
       
    		We know that English grammar can be difficult and confusing, so we have kept the language in the explanations and in the example sentences as simple as possible.
       
    		We cover all the main areas of English grammar in some depth. Most of the units have links to related topics and we have a detailed grammar index with over 1,000 entries that allows you to find the point you need quickly and easily.
     
      Methodology
    		Our methods are based on sound teaching practice. We break down the writing and grammar into individual points so that you learn step by step. We provide models and example sentences so you can see how the language is used. Many of the units have graphics, diagrams and illustrations to help explain difficult points.
       
    		Most of the readings and exercises are designed to practice a specific grammar point or principle of writing that has been explained in the units.
       
    		We have applied traditional language exercise types to computer-based learning. These exercises types include:

    		Traditional texts books only give you an answer key. However, the majority of the practice exercises on our website have detailed Review pages where we explain why the answers are correct and why other answers are incorrect. We know that this is very important for learners. This pattern of explain, practice, review is an established teaching method that has been proven to work.
     
      Participation, feedback and chat rooms
    		English Writing Online is based on the belief that you can only learn by doing. We encourage you to join in and participate, and we have a number of ways for you to do this. We have forums for movie reviews, pets, problem pages, and recipes. If you want to create a forum on a topic that we have not covered, email us and we will set it up.
       
    		You can also join in by taking part in our online opinion poll. The topic changes regularly and if you want to add some comments about the opinion poll, we have a forum for that too.
       
    		Our web pages also have feedback pages that let you rate the page on a scale of 1-5. Let us know if you thought the page was too easy, too difficult, helpful or unhelpful. You can also add comments to the feedback page. We value your opinions as they help us design pages and units to fit your needs.
     
    		We also encourage you to use the feedback pages to tell us which areas of English you want help or practice with because, unlike a traditional text book, we are constantly adding pages and exercises. We pride ourselves on being flexible and responsive to your language needs. We love hearing from you and want you to feel at home with us.
